Francisco Jose Garcia - Exhibition Opening
To complement the Stela 9 launch, we are introducing one of the best contemporary Guatemalan painters who will be exhibiting his art right next to the fashion items.
Francisco uses watercolour on paper as his main materials, but also uses liquid watercolour which allows the colours to have an incredibly vibrant quality. He uses several layers of watercolour which allows the works to have fluidity and precision, producing images built on memory and imagination.
Francisco explores the traces of identity, a theme that is fully engrained and understood through his heritage from Guatemala. His Guatemalan roots are a source of inspiration where small images of western culture are drawn next to Guatemalan images appearing in an almost allusive way and showing the inevitable erosion of the local culture. The reference to cartography is made to further explore cultural identity but from a different perspective.
